It takes time to become good at something or to even know what to do next in life.
This is an important topic to me, till the start of my college degree I was too naive on how the world works and anything in it. I sometimes wish I had learnt something during my high school from books or from people about life and the things to be done to find the right career.
The schools barely teach us anything about life or how the world works, it is upon us to go out of the way to learn new and important things in life and in our career.
After realising that I need to understand more about the world in a better way, I came across some ways we can get access to good guidance and am sharing some of them here. Hope you find them useful.
Ways we can get access to a mentor and their wisdom:
Search among friends and family
If your parents or relatives or the parents of your friends strike to you as a role model, then by any means seek their guidance, ask them questions and learn from them and their story.
Find mentors in books
The authors of non-fiction books have often worked their entire lifetimes and have shared their best findings and wisdom in 200-300 page books.
Which is why books offer to be condensed form of high quality wisdom that you can instantly learn from and implement in your life, to move forward in life.
Virtual mentorship via podcasts
Most of the present age leaders offer podcasts, sharing their experiences with anyone who is willing to listen. They also bring in high performing guests offering various insights that would otherwise not be accesible to us.
It is far easier to respond to audio information compared to learning via reading, and its often convinient to switch on a podcast while travelling via bus/metro, or going for a walk or a jog. After getting used to the podcasts, you can also up the pace to 1.5 to 2 times the normal speed.
The podcasts I have come across that are of high value:
- Impact Theory by Tom Bilyeu
- MindValley by Vishen Lakhiani
- The Mastery Sessions by Robin Sharma
- On Purpose by Jay Shetty
Learn from friends and collegues
Friends are mentors with whom you can have a lot a fun along with learning new things. They often offer different set of perspectives and bring their side of experience to the table.
Learn from every interaction
Every interaction, experience, and person has something to teach us.
Some might teach you enthusiam and art of being proactive, some may be good in taking initiative and building a relationship. Even a stranger who offered you help or striked up a coversation can teach you about kindness, trust, and being an active participant in life.
“Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own.“
Bruce Lee
Personal takeaway:
I personally found books and podcasts to be highly valuable sources of good quality knowledge, I have come to know so much more about the world and about life in the past two years than I ever did till college. Although, its far more important to implement what we learn, I have to get more proactive than I have been.
Takeaways
Absorb all the good ideas from the mentor, and learn from their positive experiences and their mistakes. It advantageous to have a mindset of always being a learner, and learn from every interaction and experience.

Was still thinking of this post today. What great advice to have a virtual mentor or one from a book. I think in some ways my mentors have turned into artists I admire and have interaction with; there is definitely a kind of indirect mentoring that can exist. Good post! It’ll stay with me.

Hey, thanks a lot Benjamin! π
Yeah its tough to find good mentors, books are a good source in my case. Learning from respected artists and artist friends is an incredible way, I assume that partly might be the reason why you write so well! I appreciate your sincere feedback! Have a great day! π

Yes, we should be open to learning new things. There is always room for growth. If we see every view every situation as an opportunity to learn, we can grow.
Great post.
